Born to a feral cat in Arlington County, Lucky, and his siblings were brought to the Animal Welfare League where they entered the League’s Kitten College foster program. Lucky’s mom had been trapped in a TNR program and later released.
“We have to bring kittens in before they hit about the six-week mark, because before six weeks is really the socialization window for kittens. It becomes a lot more difficult to get them to adjust to being a pet after six weeks,” Chelsea Jones, a spokesperson for the nonprofit, said. “So it’s a very short window.”
When he entered the Kitten College program in August, Lucky was around 3 – 4 weeks old and weighed about 1.2 pounds. He truly blossomed in foster care, however, when he became ready for adoption at eight weeks old, he was having trouble finding his forever home.
You see Lucky was the only black kitten in his litter, all his brothers and sisters were tabbies. Probably due to his color, Lucky still waited for the right family.

Eventually, a family did adopt him, only to return him three days later. Apparently, caring for a kitten was more work than they thought it would be.
“We appreciate that they brought him back to us so that we could find him a home that was maybe a little bit more ready,” Jones said. “But when kittens get returned, it’s always like, ‘Well, gosh. Darn.’”
Back in the shelter, Lucky found himself with a new roommate that had a lighter coat than he did. She was soon adopted. Lucky got another roommate, a gorgeous Siamese with bright blue eyes, who was also soon adopted.
