An orange and white pregnant cat was discovered outdoors and taken to an animal shelter for assistance. Severely anxious, with flattened ears and a strong aversion to touch, the cat, named Sandy, proved difficult for shelter staff to handle.
“No one there could handle her,” Heidi Shoemaker of Foster Kitten Mama shared.
Recognizing the urgency of Sandy’s situation, Heidi stepped in to offer her help. Setting up a cozy nursery, Heidi encountered Sandy’s wary demeanor and worked diligently to establish trust from a distance.
“I have worked with many feral mama kitties over almost five years. It takes a ton of time and patience to see if they can calm down enough to live an indoor life.”

Despite initial challenges, Sandy delivered five precious orange tabby kittens exactly one week after her arrival.
Displaying fierce protectiveness, Sandy required patience and gentle reassurance from Heidi as she navigated motherhood.
“I have to have patience and try to stay as calm as I can to help her. That means lots of slow blinks and sitting with her doing nothing but showing her I can be near her and not hurt her.”
Gradually, Sandy began to show signs of progress, allowing treats near her and eventually accepting them from Heidi’s hand.
“She gets crunchy treats that I throw right by her. These are the things that help build trust.”
Despite the loss of one kitten, Heidi provided dedicated care to the remaining litter, addressing health concerns and ensuring their well-being.
Over time, Sandy’s behavior shifted, demonstrating increasing acceptance of Heidi’s presence and even welcoming pets and treats.
Through consistent efforts and unwavering dedication, Heidi witnessed Sandy’s remarkable transformation from a fearful and defensive cat to one who now enjoys moments of calm and companionship.
Today, Sandy’s demeanor reflects the profound impact of patience, compassion, and trust-building efforts, showcasing the incredible journey they have embarked on together.
“It’s taken eight weeks of me sitting with her every day, hours and hours of just showing her she’s safe, feeding her treats, and caring for her and her babies.”
“She’s come so far from lunging at me to just looking at me calmly when I walk up. I’m so proud of our progress together. What a journey it’s been so far.”
