As the snowflakes gently tumble from the sky you are walking through a winter wonderland of white, when out of nowhere, through the trees, wanders a large cat! Gentle and majestic, it easily pads its way through the snow on paws more like snowshoes. What takes your breath away is its sheer size!
Wondering for a moment if you have been outflanked by a large wild cat, it then pricks one ear at you and gently chirps a greeting.
That’s when you realize you are not in any danger at all, you have just met a Maine Coon.
The Maine Coon stands well apart from most of their domestic feline cousins for many reasons. Let’s go through them with a photographic array of these magnificent cats.
Second, only to the Savannah, Maine Coons stand head and shoulders over other cats. However, the Savannah gets its size from its close genetic relationship to wild cats, whereas the Maine Coon has no recent wild cat ancestry. A female can weigh anywhere between 8 to 12 pounds, with a male weighing between 13 to 18 pounds. That is a lot of cat food, not to mention the necessity for a good-sized litter box!
The length of these cats is worth mentioning as well. The average Maine Coon can measure up to three feet. The record goes to a Maine Coon by the name of Ludo who measures 118.33 centimeters, 45 and a half inches long. The average six-year stands at this height making this one big kitty cat!

The size of a Maine Coons paw is pretty much in keeping with the size of the cat. Usually white, these paws are perfect for walking in the snow, making it easy for this cat to adapt to cold climates.

The Maine Coon is sometimes known as Snowshoe cats. Its paws often come with larger toes, or even a thumb, something possessed by polydactyl cats.

In addition to allover shaggy fur, the Maine Coon wears a thick ruff, or mane, around the neck which thickens further in winter months. The tips of their ears boast a tuft of fur drawing them further into a point.
Plus, their glorious tails set the standard in fluff.
