Trying To Survive On The Streets, Hungry, Heavily Pregnant, And Covered In Fleas, All She Wants Is Somewhere Safe To Have Her Babies!

After arriving at her forever home, feeling safe at last, a stray cat soon goes into labor.

Brought into an animal rescue shelter in California, a stray cat is in desperate need of attention. Heavily pregnant, she is covered in fleas, and very very hungry.

She is soon taken in by Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals, who quickly organize a foster home for the expectant mom-to-be. 

The former stray soon finds herself under the roof of Angela Su, a volunteer who works with the shelter. She immediately goes to work treating the cat, who she names Iris, for fleas and tapeworm.

The clearly sweet-tempered cat purred the entire time, very happy to be off the streets and somewhere safe.

“The shelter had estimated that the kittens would be born sometime next week. But to my surprise, a few hours after mama arrived to my house and settled down, she started having contractions,” said Angela.

“Yesterday night, mama cat gave birth to 4 healthy kittens. Mama cat is exhausted but really really sweet and attentive to her babies,” she added.

Iris relished having somewhere safe and comfortable where she could focus on her newborn kittens, three boys, and a girl. A devoted mom, she barely leaves the next to eat, preferring to stay with her babies. It got to the point where Angela had to start room service.

“She will only eat for a few seconds before a kitten will start crying and she’ll instantly return back to her kittens, even if she’s hungry. So for the past few days, I’ve been holding the food bowl right next to where mama Iris is nursing the kittens,” said Angela.

Angela named the three boys Ember, Clover, and Comet. The only girl was given the name Willow. The ever talkative Iris relayed how happy she was by talking nonstop to her kittens along with constant purring.

By 9 days old all the kittens had doubled their weight, Willow, the overachiever had opened her eyes, leaving the boys behind.

At two weeks old they had all opened their eyes and were becoming much more active. Bath time was not an option, Iris made quite sure everyone knew it was mandatory. If anyone tried to wriggle their way out of reach she soon grabbed hold and pulled them back.

“Iris can get very vocal around grooming time, especially when her kittens are not listening to her,” said Angela.

The shelter thinks Iris is still really a kitten herself. This, however, has not stopped her from being a loving, attentive mom. She never lets her kittens stray too far, making sure they always stay in sight.

“When mama Iris first came to me she was very pregnant, covered in fleas. You could see them crawling around her face and the white fur on her cheeks and forehead were dark with blood and flea dirt. Thankfully, we were able to get the fleas off of Iris before she gave birth,” said Angela.

“It breaks my heart to think of what would happen if Iris didn’t get rescued.”

“I’m so glad that we were able to get her to my home in time so that she and her kittens will be able to grow and live in a safe and loving environment.”

By the time they were eight weeks old, the kittens had grown in leaps and bounds.

The family remained as close as ever, still loving their cuddle time.

Before anyone could seemingly even blink the pre-adoption process had been completed, and Comet, the first to be adopted, was in his forever home.

Ember and Willow were the next to go, they are slowly adjusting to their new environment, still a little shy.

Next was Iris herself, who is so spoiled with lots of fun toys and special cat food.

She well and truly landed on her paws with her forever home.

Last, but by no means least was Clover, a little hissy at first, he has a new cat sibling and dog sibling to play with.

In the space of five days, Iris and her kittens had all found loving forever homes.

Their lives of struggling on the streets well and truly in the past, and a lifetime of love to look forward to.
