Elber, who was concerned about the high number of abandoned animals in his area, picked up the animal and took it home to care for it. Initially mistaking the creature for a stray kitten, Elber soon realized that the tiny creature was not behaving like a typical cat.
“I picked him up on the road, he looked exactly like a cat, and I thought to myself, poor little animal, he must be lost in this lonely location, I better take him home,” the kind farmer explained. “I took a close look at him and was suspicious since he had a long tail and round ears. Furthermore, his behavior was not identical to that of domesticated cats.”
Upon closer examination, Elber noticed that the animal had a long tail, and round ears, and its behavior was unlike that of domesticated cats. Suspecting that the animal was not a cat, Elber contacted the Tolima Regional Autonomous Corporation, the country’s environmental agency, to investigate.

The agency discovered that the tiny animal was actually a two-month-old cougar suffering from a medical problem caused by starvation.
Domestic house cats usually weigh around 10 pounds and can be playful but not dangerous. However, South American cougars can grow to several feet long and weigh over 200 pounds preferring to dine on deer, sloths, and lizards amongst other things, making them more than a little difficult to handle.
The baby cougar was then transferred to the Center of Attention and Valuation of Wild Fauna in Ibagué, where it is currently being cared for until it fully recovers. Thanks to Elber’s kind-heartedness, the helpless newborn animal was given a second chance at life, leaving Elber with quite a tale to tell.
