Covered In Wounds After Years Of Trying To Survive, Life On The Streets Had Taken Its Toll!

Years of trying to survive on the streets had taken its toll. This winter he fell gravely ill, they were in a race against time to save his life.

He was about 6-years old when he became ill, neighborhood folk had been feeding the local stray. He had managed to make through the last winter, though one of his ears had become frozen, and now he was failing fast, trying to survive on the streets had taken its toll.

He was taken to Chatons Orphelins Montréal, Montreal, Canada for immediate care and attention, they immediately organized veterinary care. There it was apparent that years of living on the streets had taken its toll. Un-neutered he was covered in scars from all his fights, along with a coat smelling of urine, they found he also had FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus).

“People in the neighborhood fed him but no one was taking care of him. He was a big alley cat that everyone was used to seeing,” said a representative from Chatons Orphelins Montréal.

Barney, as he was named had used up 8 of his 9 lives and staff would need all their skills to save his last.

Barney’s nose was completely blocked and he was having trouble breathing. One of his ears was almost completely withered due to frostbite, both were infected with ear mites. Dental work would also need to be done.

Cleary in pain he had something stuck firmly around his neck! But first, they had to catch him!

Despite a myriad of health issues, all he wanted was hugs, cuddles, and snuggles.

“This big teddy bear came straight to us for some affection. He had very big cheeks, strong muscles.

He had to be the king of his neighborhood,” the rescue added.

Right away he was placed on medication to aid in his fight against the illnesses attacking his body.
