Trapped In A Desperate Situation, Time Was Rapidly Running Out!

Construction workers find a young kitten trapped in a very desperate situation!

Early on Monday morning, the Prince Edward Island, Human Society received an emergency call on its animal protection line from a nearby construction site. It turns out a construction worker walking through the site heard a cat’s cries for help and found a small female kitten trapped in a water basin drain with time clearly running out!

“She was stuck in a pipe hole with her head in this big water basin drain,” said Jennifer Harkness, development and communications officer for the P.E.I. Humane Society.

After arriving at the scene, the humane society found workers were doing their best to rescue her by lubricating the rim around the hole where her head was trapped, using soap, but not having much luck.

The poor kitten was in a desperate situation, as workers began cutting the plastic with electrical equipment, in an effort to save her.

“One of the workers was on the other side was holding the kitten upward because she was kind of just hanging by her neck in a way. So they were holding her and making sure she felt safe,” said Jennifer.

Due to the kitten’s frail condition, a shelter staff member began to administer fluid, hoping to keep her alive while she was being rescued. Finally, the kitten was removed from the plastic drain base, though the plastic hole still stuck around her neck.

“She was stuck with that drain around her neck, but we were able to carry her at that point,” Jeniffer said.

The cat was taken to the Atlantic Veterinary College, where they were able to safely cut off the remaining plastic to free her.

“They administered more fluids. She was very matted, so they shaved her and made sure she was in stable condition. And, eventually, later on in the day, she came back to the shelter.”

No one is sure how long the cat may have been stuck. “She was struggling. I think if it had even been one more day, I am not even sure she would have made it, really. I’m just glad someone heard her meowing,” Harkness said.

The cat found in the drain has been named Pisces — after one of the three astrological water signs.

“She’s doing much better,” Harkness said. “She is still a little scared because she probably hasn’t had a lot of socialization. But she is getting used to us. She is eating OK, she is drinking OK.”
