The Odds Of Surviving The Surgery Were Low. However, Without The Surgery, Her Odds Of Surviving Were Zero!

Mom leaving her kittens in such a bad situation really meant that human intervention was necessary.

Born one Sunday in a water pipe in Phoenix, Arizona, Mom had left them tangled in their own umbilical cords and placenta. If not for rescuers, their fate really does not bear thinking about.

As it was they were not in a good way. Rescuers did their best, but untangling them all was not easy. One sister’s cord was cut too short, resulting in an infection. Another had her cord so tightly wrapped around a rear foot it had cut off the flow of blood! As a result, the foot had begun to rot.

After being given a home with Shelbi Uyehara, the founder of Jin’s Bottle Babies, a trip to the vet was arranged, and the news was initially good for the kitten with the bad foot.

“She’s still wild as heck and eats real good and purrs and loves pets. So I was pleased to hear the vet say she looks great. We are just going to wait for the dead portion of her foot to fall off,” said Shelbi.

However, the good news was short-lived, as when her foot finally fell off, it left a wound that would never actually heal.

Having had her leg broken at such a young age had left her future looking far from certain.

Pacing back and forth she felt completely helpless knowing there was nothing she could do for her struggling kitten!

“She is now going under anesthesia for an emergency amputation. They have to take back the leg far enough so they can close her wound, otherwise, it will never heal and she won’t survive. She is only 9 days old and the odds of her surviving anesthesia are minimal, but her odds of surviving without it are nill,” Shelbi said.

No one had discussed the effects of anesthesia on newborn kittens with Babychild, the name Shelbi had given her little fighter. Because she bounced back from the surgery with a newly stitched stump, rolling around on her tote as though nothing had happened.

Though her appetite is a little patchy she was scooting around with boundless energy.

This never-ending supply of energy resulted in Babychild ripping out most of her stitches. But the tiny enigma was healing so fast the vet removed the remaining sutures and applied surgical glue to her stub.

The problem though, was that Babychild was still using her injured leg, making it prone to the wound possibly opening up again!

“Hopefully once she has the muscle strength and her legs are able to support her, she will not use it so much. But at the last appointment, the doctor said if Babychild continues to use her amputated leg and open it up, we will have to amputate higher.”
