She was abandoned by her owners because she was born with extra toes and different colored eyes!
Sansa, a beautiful snowy white cat from New York City was born with a rare condition known as heterochromia. This rare condition showed up by giving her two different colored eyes and extra toes.
Possibly due to her unique appearance, Sansa’s previous owners threw her out. As a result, this left Sansa suffering from extreme anxiety and panic attacks.
Thankfully Sansa was found by animal rescue staff and subsequently rescued earlier this year.
Her new owner Karen met Sansa at an adoption event. Her eyes were continually drawn to the cage that contained a cat called Snowy.
It was a cage that seemed empty but had a sign saying the cat inside suffered from anxiety after being neglected and then thrown out by her owners!
“Turns out the cage was not empty – she was simply hiding under the cat bed! I felt an immediate connection to her because I suffer from anxiety myself, and I knew that I wanted her to be a part of our family before I even saw her,” said Karen.
‘We were informed that her foster desperately wanted her adopted because she was so anxious that she needed to be kept in a carrier at all times,’ said Karen.
Since that auspicious day, Sansa has attracted over 200,000 fans on social media, and much more importantly, found a home.
“Many people have expressed how much they love Sansa’s uniqueness with her different colored eyes and extra toes,” Karen added.
Karen who works in a healthcare consultancy helping patients with serious health concerns says that she did not adopt Sansa because of her unique appearance.
It was really because she wanted to rescue her from being confined to a cage after suffering from her previous owner’s treatment.
‘Imagine my surprise when I realized that she had different colored eyes and extra toes.
After bringing her home it took the attractive cat quite a while before she could begin to trust her new owners.
Always scared, she would hide behind the TV and would only appear when it was time to eat. It was only later that Karen and her husband would find that Sansa also suffered from a condition known as Feline Hyperesthesia Disorder, a type of anxiety.
“Shortly after she came home, we realized that Sansa exhibited strange behaviors in which her back would ‘roll’ uncontrollably, followed by her attacking her tail multiple times a day,” said Karen.
“She seemed to be in pain whenever her back rolled and we could not understand why. We had never seen a cat do this before.”
“We recorded these episodes to show the vet and after some tests, she was eventually diagnosed with FHS.”
After they received treatment for the anxiety, along with CBD oil, Sansa’s anxiety receded and she finally became queen of her domain.
Sansa has now learned to relax knowing she no longer has anything to fear.
Looking dapper in her pink bow. Karen started an Instagram account with pictures of Sansa which now counts more than 20,000 followers.
‘She has claimed the apartment as her own and is the true queen of our household,” her new owner said.
‘Queen Sansa wakes us up at 6am every morning to announce that she’s hungry, and if we don’t get up in time, she proceeds to knock things off the nightstand one by one.
‘She knows exactly what she needs to do to get her way,’ Karen said.
‘I started an Instagram account @sansa.thecat because I wanted to document each day of our journey caring for an anxious, genetically different cat.
Karen said that if she doesn’t get out of bed early enough to feed Sansa, the cat will start knocking things off the nightstand
