In Such Poor Condition, They Didn’t Even Know How To Eat Or Drink!

Dumped at the local shelter they were only five weeks old, half the weight the should be they were almost blind and didn’t know how to nurse!

Venus and Serena were no longer wanted by their owner and dumped at the local Los Vegas shelter at only five weeks old.

If that was not bad enough, they were half the weight they should be for their age and were suffering from a severe upper respiratory infection. Both kittens were also almost blind due to severe conjunctivitis!

When experienced foster Mom Ellen Richter, volunteering through the Nevada SPCA, found out about the sisters she swooped in to offer them a temporary home and quickly found one of the main issues for their low weight.

“Both are at 12 oz, and should be closer to 20 oz, they didn’t know how to nurse from a bottle or eat on their own,” she said.

Ellen quickly went to work hoping to turn their lives around from the downward spiral they were on. Feeding them from a syringe she noticed they were swallowing large amounts of milk. Concerned it might be ‘megaesophagus,’ a generalized enlargement of the esophagus, she took them to the vet.

“The vet didn’t think it was a big deal, as they were not regurgitating what they had been drinking,” said Ellen.

Ellen named one of the kittens ‘Venus the screamer’ for obvious reasons.

Venus was not backward in coming forwards about letting everyone know how she felt about things!

With Ellens loving care and attention, the kitten’s health began to improve. Both were on antibiotics and steroids to help fight their upper respiratory infections and inflamed throats.

Using humidifier treatments to break up congestion, and warm compresses for their eyes, improvement first became more noticeable in Serena who began making biscuits in earnest.

Both kittens were well on the path to good health, though their eye infections were still raging and the kittens still couldn’t eat on their own.

Their future still in the balance Ellen took heart when she saw Serena trying to drink water out of a bowl.

Still badly underweight Ellen could see a drastic improvement in their overall health two days later, though there was a minor setback when she discovered they both had ringworm.

Abandoned and alone, his sister already unconscious, all he can do is cry for help in the hope Mom will come back!

Listless and lethargic he was barely clinging onto life!

“Venus and Serena are improving daily. I’m still bottle feeding them, even though I try each time for them to eat wet food. They just aren’t ready yet,” Ellen said.

Another breakthrough was made when the inflammation in one of Venus’s eyes drastically reduced and she even used the litter boxes for the first time.

Then to top it all off, they started eating wet food!

Soon energy levels were improving and they were over their colds, even starting to play and beginning to put on weight.

“Both are over 17 ounces and gaining, we will be starting their ringworm topical treatment next week,” Ellen said.

Ellen took the now highly energetic kittens to the eye specialist for a check-up and received some unwelcome news.
