After Losing Their Mom Far To Early, It Wasn’t Long Till They Fighting For Their Own Lives!

When most people see a cute little kitten they don’t really think about the back story behind the cute little ball of fluff.

Shelter and rescue staff do, and for many of them, it can be a gut punch.

For them, it’s saving a life and seeing the transformation that goes along with it. And ultimately taking innocent lives off the streets and finding them homes.

As was the case with Apple and Blackberry, two completely adorable kittens with an equally tragic and avoidable backstory.

These two cuties were born to a feral Mom in Lake Worth, Florida. She gave birth to a litter of seven kittens, all were about to find themselves fighting for their lives.

About the same time, Apple and Blackberry were fighting for survival along with their siblings, Carmen Weinberg, founder of Animal Friends Project Inc in Delray Beach, happened to be on Facebook one evening when she saw a post on August 25 that made her heart stop.

The post featured a photo of a litter of seven newborn kittens, all alone in a plastic tub. While the would-be rescuers no doubt had good intentions, their lack of knowledge on what to do when you find a newborn litter had placed all the kittens at great risk.

Where the Moma is and what happened to her is not clear, however, she had probably run off in fear when the humans came too close her nest.

Even worse was when the litter had been taken some of the kittens had become entangled in their own umbilical cords, one with an almost severed rear foot!

These well-intentioned people had not waited for Mom to return, so all Carmen could do is try and contact them.

Only a few days old and fighting for their lives they had somehow become separated from their Mom!

In terrible shape, they were found holding each to each and refused to let go!

The feral mom was outside. When I saw the photo of the kitten with the injured foot, I told them to not put that kitten outside. That I would go and get him because he needed urgent medical attention,” said Carmen.

She received no reply that night. It wasn’t till 12.30 pm the next day when they finally got back to her.

She said they still had 5 kittens inside and that they were trying to bottle feed them. But that the cat mom had 2 outside with her.

I got there around 1:30 pm and saw that they were feeding kittens cows milk! I explained that kittens needed mom or to be fed KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer),” Carmen added.

Carmen got everyone changed over to kitten formula before attempting anything else, like returning the kittens to their Mom. Besides the injured kitten needed medical attention.

After the kittens were fed two were placed on the homeowner’s porch, thankfully Mom soon plucked them to safety. Carmen then took the injured kitten to the vet for immediate treatment.

“The vet said it didn’t look very hopeful but we decided to try. Please, little one, keep on fighting,” said Carmen.

When she got back to the house she found the homeowners still had two kittens with them. Though they seemed to be fine she took them to the vet for a checkup just to be sure.
