A Japanese Cat Temple That Has Cat Monks And It’s The Cutest Place On Earth

Japan, a country full of surprises, has an even bigger surprise for cat lovers in the form of a shrine known in English as the Meow Meow Shrine.

As cat lovers you can now all jump for joy and book your flights to Japan, you will not be disappointed. Japan as many people know, is a country that is literally full of surprises, especially if you are a lover of furry felines. As as you get off your airplane head over and see Nyan Nyan Ji (The Meow Meow Shrine), in the city of Kyoto.

You would think that a shrine with the name Meow Meow should have lots of cats? If that’s what you are thinking then you are absolutely right. There is a feline monk who has his own cat assistant monks. A purrfect situation for any feline fancier.

Here is the head monk, Koyuki. His owner says he is a very friendly cat and loves meeting all the ‘worshippers.’

Koyuki enjoys meeting all the visitors to the Nyan Nyan Shrine. Inside you will find you can order anything you want to eat or drink, and the great thing is it’s all cat-themed.

Koyuki’s owner explained to Bored Panda that the Meow Meow Shrine was opened by a painter, Toru Kaya, with a favorite theme of his being the cat.

This painter is well known for painting shrines and temples in Japan.

The shrine is also full of drawings and statues that depict cats too. If you are a souvenir hunter you will not be disappointed as you can buy them inside the temple shop.

There are apparently 7 cats currently working in the temple: Koyuki (who is female), Waka (male), Chin (male), Ren (female), Konatsu (female), Chicchi (female), and Aruji (male).

“Visitors who come to worship play with cats and enjoy cafes and cat art,” said Koyuki’s owner, who sent Bored Panda some exclusive photos from the Meow Meow Shrine.

Koyuki isn’t the first cat monk to occupy the place of honor in the shrine: there are already three generations of feline monks. The temple opened only in 2016, so we’re not sure if such a quick change in cattos heading the shrine is a good or a bad thing.

The cat assistants aren’t as popular as the head monk, but they’re just as cute
