No wonder the Maine Coon is the most popular cat in the United States. This is not your usual run-of-the-mill cat, going where and doing what most cats do anything and everything to avoid. Meaning, don’t be surprised if your Maine Coon kitten wants to take the odd dip.

They can easily grow to be over 48 inches in length with a weight of around 16 to 20 pounds. Though some have been known to exceed over 30 pounds, so make sure you have a reliable supply of kitty kibble handy!

The exact origin of this breed is not definitely known, though due to its genetic closeness to the Norwegian Forest cat it is thought they were introduced by Viking settlers or European sailors in the 1700s. Perhaps crossed with an unknown breed now thought extinct, this accounts for the Maine Coons’ unique appearance.

The chimera kitten comes into the world after two individual embryos merge into one. This means in essence two fraternal twins merging into one single living organism.
